Room 10 Buddies

On Wednesday, we paired up with our buddies from Ms. Pancho’s 1st grade class for the first time. It’s going to be a great year as we read to each other, do art projects together, and learn from each other. This week, we did interviews to find out our buddy’s “favorites” and did some art with them as well. Enjoy!

Reduce and Reuse

On Tuesday, October 21, we learned about different ways we could reduce our waste and resuse items instead of throwing them away.  We had an indoor picnic to see how much of our lunch ends up in the trash, and what we can do to cut down on the waste we produce.  We also constructed mobiles that remind us that everything we use ultimately comes from the earth, so we want to conserve our natural resources by… you guessed it, practicing the 4 Rs! Landfills

This past week we built our own landfills-in-a-bottle. We began with gravel, dirt, and a clay and plastic liner, then we alternated layers of trash and dirt to mimic real-life landfills. We’ll excavate them in a few weeks to see what happens to our trash when it goes to the Altamont Landfill. (This is where all the waste created in Alameda County goes to.) Neighborhood Clean-Up!

As part of our 4 Rs Action Program, Room 14 went on a neighborhood clean-up last Tuesday (Oct. 7), complete with clipboards in hand to keep a tally of the different types of pollution we found.
